What exterior house painting looks like with us
Most of A Touch of a Brush's reviews are for exteriors, and they tell the same story: Albert walks the house, points out the rot and cracks before you do, and writes a fixed price that covers fixing them. The house is pressure washed, damaged wood and siding replaced, gaps caulked and bare wood primed before a drop of finish goes on. Customers keep mentioning the brush work - "they use hand brush not spray" - and that the crew shows up at the same time every day and cleans up before leaving.
What’s included
What happens on an exterior job, in order
The order is what makes it last:
- Pressure wash. Dirt, pollen, mildew and chalky old paint all stop new paint bonding.
- Repair. Rotten siding, trim and fascia are cut out and replaced with new wood - not filled and painted over.
- Scrape, sand, caulk and prime. Loose paint comes off, open joints are sealed and bare wood is primed.
- Paint. Two finish coats where the surface needs it, cut in by hand at trim and windows.
- Walk-around. You look it over with Albert before anything is packed up.
The 5-year warranty and yearly wash
In Albert's words: "I offer a 5 year warranty that includes one free inspection and pressure washing per year for 5 years." Customers bring it up on their own - one wrote that the yearly visit "increased the value of their work by extending the time between painting," and another, selling her house, passed the warranty and washes on to the buyers to help at closing.
Charlotte weather and your paint
Charlotte summers are long, hot and humid, and that shows up as green mildew and algae on the north and shaded sides of a house. Every spring the pine pollen coats everything yellow, and red clay splashes up onto the bottom courses of siding. None of it hurts sound paint if it is washed off - which is exactly what the yearly pressure wash is for.
Older and historic homes
One HomeAdvisor customer hired Albert for an 1880s house with two-story columns that were rotting under the surface; his carpenter carved out the rot and turned replacement pieces so the fix cannot be seen. Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in them is covered by the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule - mention your home's age when you call.
